Kazakh Delegation Visits Leading Waste Processing Enterprises in Spain
As part of the 8th Kazakhstan-Spain Business Council, the Kazakh delegation visited the Valdemingómez Technology Park in Madrid, which specializes in biogas production and waste treatment. The Spanish side presented the operations of the eco-tech park for sorting and processing municipal solid waste (MSW), as well as a construction waste recycling and treatment plant.
Operating since 1978, the Valdemingómez Technology Park processes over 1.2 million tons of waste generated annually in Madrid. The complex, located in the Villa de Vallecas district, integrates all urban waste processing facilities, managing more than 3,400 tons of waste daily through a comprehensive system.
In addition, the Foreign Representative of JSC "KAZAKH INVEST" A. Mukanova organized a visit to the production facility of Innovaciones Imabe, one of the world’s top three manufacturers of waste processing equipment, as well as equipment for the metallurgical and mining sectors.
Currently, the municipal solid waste (MSW) recycling rate in Kazakhstan is 25.4%, while about 74% of waste is sent to landfills. The total volume of recycled and landfilled waste in the country stands at approximately 2.6 million tons. Effective implementation of investment projects in the MSW recycling sector will reduce landfill volumes, lower environmental risks, and increase raw material recycling rates.
"Developing MSW recycling requires high-quality secondary raw materials, which is impossible without efficient waste collection, transportation, and deep sorting systems. In this regard, the Government of Kazakhstan has approved a mechanism for concessional financing of waste management projects, including the purchase of garbage trucks, sorting lines, and processing facilities," noted A. Mukanova.
For his part, Juan José Benítez, CEO of Innovaciones Imabe, emphasized that Kazakhstan is a promising market, and the company is in talks with a Kazakh partner on localizing the production of transfer stations for household waste.
The visit to Innovaciones Imabe included participation from T. Onzhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of JSC "Baiterek" National Managing Holding, M. Yelibayev, Chairman of the Board of Development Bank of Kazakhstan, as well as representatives from the Ministry of Industry and Construction of Kazakhstan, the Akimat of Astana, and others.
Additionally, within the framework of the 8th Kazakhstan-Spain Business Council, bilateral meetings were held with leading Spanish companies including Loramendi, Técnicas Reunidas, Aqualia, and Indra. The discussions focused on investment projects in mechanical engineering, water resource management, transport, and opportunities for localization of production in Kazakhstan.
JSC "KAZAKH INVEST" will continue its work to attract strategic investors and implement promising projects aimed at the sustainable development of Kazakhstan’s economy.
